Additional Workshop Information
This is one of the first film recordings of sign language. George Veditz was elected president of the National Association of the Deaf in 1904 and again in 1907. As cinema was developing at the turn of the century, he saw this new technology as means of preserving sign language, which was under threat by the strong oralist movement at the time.
